Steel tire wire

Steel tire wire scarp or Tire derived steel (TDS) is a light melting scrap obtained during the shredding process of waste tires.

This material is a high quality steel with high carbon content. It is incorporated in the tires structure to withstand bumps, heat and other hazardous conditions. Consequently reclaimed tire wire is of a very high quality and conforms to well know standards.

The current technologies tend to remove the wire at the earliest possible stage, to protect the machines down the processing line from usury. Pre-shredding, at ambient temperature, is usually followed by a first granulation stage in which, depending on the configuration of the plant, a screener of 15 to 25 mm filters the rubber chips. Directly after this granulation, a magnetic device separates the steel wire from the rubber. Along with the wires, around 10 to 35 percentage by weight of rubber and textiles is also withdrawn, so the final recovery of the material differs in function of the contamination grade of the material (rubber/fiber).

Generally 10% - 20% of the weight of an old passenger car tire usually consists of steel. An average shredding plant produces about 100-200 MT of steel tire wire and its quality can vary according to technology, storing and management systems adopted by the producing plants.

Another key factor in determining the quality of the material is related to the protection of the steel from atmospheric agents.
Since the material is conformed in thin wires, it can easily oxidize. So a key factor in improving its quality is to protect the wire from any atmospheric agents.

Conversion of steel tire wire in valuable products

According to the contamination grade our tire wire can be primary recycled in metallurgical plants (r4).
If the material still has an high grade of contaminates the material can be processed and compacted in authorized facilities that submit the material to physical o thermo-physical treatments to obtain a material more suitable for remelting. Tire steel wire scrap is sourced from the certified vendors for quality assurance.
